I would want HPU to be careful as to how automated and easy to setup a reselling package would be. In my opinion, if your not smart enough to be able to setup your own billing and setup system than you have no right to be offering hosting in the first place. Everyone and there mom is selling hosting teases days so it's important that when you setup a site to sell hosting that you know what your doing and how to server your customers needs. I get so many commits on how good my service is from people who have been burned from other hosting company's. Many of the company’s I know for a fact are using reselling programs although I never tell clients that information.

I feel that HPU has given me plenty of transparency and it would be stupid if there was just a sign up and host system. If anyone has ever used anything other than the API from templatemoster.com to resell than you know what I am talking about. And even the API is a hit or miss.

And that’s my two bits,

Jlee

Ya its a good point but really that is what a reseller pays for right?

They pay to have someone manage the heavy lifting, hard techie stuff and they manage the customer. It is a model that can and does work. Would you say if you can't build a car then you can't be a car dealer?

I agree that there is danger in going with someone who doesnt know it all but thats why they have hosting companies. I doubt many ISP's who run the servers actually have their own datacenters and fibre lines running to support their 20 servers.

Correct me if I am wrong but Ford does not offer reselling packages that comes with a car lot, salesmen, accounting software ect...

I agree with you that we are paying the hosting company for the heavy stuff or the stuff we can't afford (like the type of connection required to run a real server).

The bottom line is if HPU started offering cookie cutter reseller packages, the integrity of the hosting service would be broken. Or at least that’s how I feel. I think when it comes down to it, a reseller would not want a company like HPU to completely hand over to you a hosting business as there is no way it would be completely branded to your company. True it would be way more easier if when I signed up for HPU I got a website with a store, a little order form, a client login area ect ect.... But I think it would always have that cookie cutter feel and never truly reflect my company.

At the same time, if it was just "1 2 3 your hosting", everybody would want to resell hosting because it would take too little work and experience to set it up. I think that would give the little hosting guy a bad name. People would no longer be willing to try a "not so known" company as opposed to a reliable one.

But as always, I could be wrong.

On a side note, I don’t have the experience and knowledge and manpower to run my own datacenter or hosting farm even if I could afford it. HPU is the perfect place to learn and grow my skills.
